Florianópolis — a quick guide

In short

"Island of Magic": more than 40 beaches on one island, from glamorous Jurerê to wild southern coves, and the zone matters more than the hotel because it takes an hour to get from one to another. Capital of Santa Catarina. The season is tied to the southern summer: December–March; at other times the water is cool but there are no crowds. The main logistical feature is that the island is large, and for getting between beaches a car is almost mandatory; buses run across the city each day with transfers.

1. Basics

  • State: Santa Catarina (SC)
  • Airport: FLN (Hercílio Luz), new terminal, on the south of the island
  • By land: bus station Rita Maria in the center — Curitiba, Camboriú, Porto Alegre
  • How many days: 4–7
  • Best season: December–March. At other times the beaches are cool, but there are no crowds. See When and where to go — "month × region" matrix (in Russian)

2. Beaches and districts of the island

The island is divided into four zones with different characters, and the choice of zone matters more than the choice of hotel: getting from one to another takes an hour.

North — infrastructure and nightlife

  • Jurerê Internacional — glamour, beach clubs, calm water. Expensive. Oriented to families and to those who need comfort
  • Canasvieiras — mass tourism, many Argentinians, full infrastructure
  • Praia Brava, Ingleses — active, built-up

East — youth, surf, party scene

  • Lagoa da Conceição — not a beach, but a lagoon and the village around it. The hub for young people: bars, hostels, a craft fair on weekends and in season
  • Praia da Joaquina — one of Brazil's main surf spots, huge dunes nearby
  • Barra da Lagoa — fishing village, calmer

South — nature and quiet

  • Campeche — long wild beach with a view of Ilha do Campeche, where boats run. Visitor numbers on the island are capped per day
  • Ribeirão da Ilha — historic Azorean village on the southwest shore, colonial-era buildings, calm water
  • Praia do Matadeiro, Lagoinha do Leste — wild coves, only accessible on foot

Center

Historic Centro with the Mercado Público market, the Hercílio Luz bridge, Ponta do Sambaqui.

3. Transport

The main feature of the city. Points on the island are spread over tens of kilometers, public transport is limited and slow.

  • Car rental is strongly recommended — without it your itinerary is much more limited. This is advice for a visitor staying a few days: for someone living here the bus network with transfers covers daily routes, see Urban transport of Florianópolis — buses, terminals and card.
  • In summer months traffic jams are serious, especially when leaving the north. Depart early.
  • Uber and 99 operate, but at distant beaches you can wait a long time for a car and it's harder to get back.

4. Where to stay

WhereFor whom
Jurerê / Canasvieiras (north)Comfort, families, infrastructure, beach clubs
Lagoa da Conceição (east)Youth, partying, central position on the island
Campeche (south)Relaxed stay, space, closer to the airport
CentroPractical for business, but not for the beach

Choose the zone to suit your plans and do not expect to "live in the north and party in the east": it is an hour's drive each time.

5. Safety

One of the safest of the large cities in Brazil; ordinary urban caution is sufficient. Two island-specific caveats:

  • In high season the island's population doubles — petty street crime and thefts on the beaches increase.
  • The main risk here is the water: on the eastern beaches, especially at Praia da Joaquina and Praia Mole, there are rip currents. Across the state seven of the nine deaths of the 2024/2025 season occurred at places without lifeguard posts — enter the water where there is a post. What to do if a current pulls you out — Water and drownings — rip currents, beach flags, what to do.

Carnival

Samba school parades at Passarela Nego Quirido — 5 and 6 February 2027, vote counting on 8 February, Champions Parade on 9 February. Florianópolis is also known for street carnival and a large LGBT scene during these days. More details at Carnival 2027 — dates and breakdown by cities (in Russian).

Where else to go from the island

Floripa serves as a base for the whole state, and three different kinds of trip start from it:
