Communities of Florianópolis — where to find community and help

checked 10 sources · 7 min readTranslated from the Russian original
In short

The most durable are religious communities: their address and schedule do not change for years. The Orthodox Parish of Saint Nicholas is at Rua Tenente Silveira, 494 in Centro, the Islamic center at Rua Felipe Schmidt, 291, and the Jewish community AIC has a headquarters in Florianópolis.

The easiest way to join without money or contacts is through the UFSC conversation group on Wednesdays in the CCE building: free, no registration and no level requirement.

Be more cautious with migrant assistance services: there appears to have been no specialized municipal centre in Floripa since 2019, and older articles continue to refer people to it. A church-university network works, and a list with phone numbers is given below.

There is intentionally no list of chats and groups here: they appear in no registry.

Sources: [1] [2] [3] — listed at the end of the page.

Why no chats and groups

The difference is verifiability. A parish, mosque or federation has registration, an address and an official registry entry, so they can be confirmed and rechecked a year later. A chat has none of that: it is renamed, closed, spawns second and third versions, and from the outside you cannot tell a live one from a dead one. Sending someone to a dead or someone else's group is worse than not naming it at all. Names and links to live communities belong to the services directory, which is updated by hand, not to the information sheet, which is updated once a quarter.

Religious communities: where each one is located

Orthodox

Parish of Saint Nicholas — Rua Tenente Silveira, 494, Centro. It is canonically attached to the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires and South America of the Ecumenical Patriarchate; the church is Greek by origin and decoration, Byzantine in architecture.

For a practicing believer this is decisive. A parish of the Ecumenical Patriarchate is not the same as a parish of the Moscow Patriarchate: since 2018 there has been no eucharistic communion between these two churches. What this means for you personally is for your spiritual father to decide: there is a difference, and you need to know about it before the first service, not after.

There is no Russian parish in Santa Catarina. The vicariate of the Russian Orthodox Church in Brazil comprises seven parishes, and they are located in São Paulo, Rio Grande do Sul, Rio de Janeiro, Pernambuco and the Distrito Federal. The nearest to the island is the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas in São Paulo, Rua Tamandaré, 710, Liberdade. That is a trip, not a Sunday service.

There is also the parish of John the Theologian in São José — Grande Florianópolis; under which jurisdiction it stands is an open question.

Jewish community

Associação Israelita Catarinense (AIC) — founded on 2 June 1990, headquarters in Florianópolis. The “Sala Jacques Schweidson” premises function both as a synagogue and as a community center for the whole state.

Here the method of verification is important: AIC is federated to CONIB, the confederation of Jewish communities of Brazil, and CONIB maintains the registry. This is a case when one should rely on the registry, not on the organization's own page.

Separately in Florianópolis there is a Jewish-Adventist congregation Beth Bnei Tsion — Rua José Boiteux, 53, Centro. This is a different tradition, and it should not be confused with the AIC community.

Muslim community

Centro Islâmico de Florianópolis — Rua Felipe Schmidt, 291, 7º andar, Centro, CEP 88010-000, phone (48) 3222-3593. A religious and educational non-profit organization.

The community took shape from 1990: until the late eighties the religion was practiced privately. By its thirtieth anniversary the community acquired its own mosque in the Coqueiros neighbourhood — the exact address remains unconfirmed.

Catholic

No separate entry is required: parishes exist in every neighbourhood, and the Archdiocese of Florianópolis is the largest religious structure in the city. What matters in practice for a newcomer is its social wing, see below. The country's religious landscape in general, including candomblé and umbanda, is in Religion in Brazil — landscape, law and how to behave in places of worship (in Russian).

Where to go for help if you have just arrived

Here the city has a working network, and it is run by the church and the university, not the municipality. According to the list maintained by the UFSC research group (updated 17 Jul 2026), the following operate in Florianópolis:

ServiceWhat it doesContact
Missão ScalabriniDocuments, psychological assistance(48) 98826-9229
Ação Social ArquidiocesanaSocial assistance at the archdiocese(48) 3224-8776

AVSI BrasilLabour market access, vocational trainingthrough the network
UFSC sem fronteiras, NAIRSupport for foreign students and migrants at the universityUFSC
Círculos de HospitalidadeIntegration and community supportthrough the network

The list is a snapshot as of Aug 2026 from one consolidated source. Phones and addresses were not individually verified on site, and for some services the list indicates only the channel of contact, not an address.

On CRAI specifically. The specialized immigrant reception centre no longer appears on the state's page, and today the government route goes through the municipality's CRAS and CREAS — the ordinary social assistance network. Details, with sources and remaining doubts, are in the discrepancy section.

Conversation group: the easiest entry without money or registration

UFSC, Portuguese conversation group — on Wednesdays from 12:30 to 13:30, room 252 of the CCE building, Trindade campus. Free, no registration, no level requirement, you can join at any time and it is open both to students and to outsiders.

This answers two questions at once: “how to improve the language” and “where to meet people without buying a ticket”. That is what the language-exchange format is for: the conversation topic is not important, regularity is, and the fact that everyone came to speak, not to listen.

Portuguese courses for migrants — free at UDESC, paid at UFSC — are a different story, with certificates, hours and attendance requirements, and that is covered in Where to learn Portuguese — free courses for migrants and what counts.

Where communities meet physically

Most do not have their own premises, so meetings and classes for adults take place in public facilities: municipal libraries, cultural centres and the CIC complex. This is public infrastructure — free entry, programmes announced locally. Addresses and hours are maintained at Bookstores, antiquarian booksellers and public libraries — addresses and who maintains the library registry (in Russian); they are not duplicated here so they do not diverge when updated.

For a newcomer this changes the search: instead of a community of people who speak your language, look for the nearest cultural centre and its events listing. Regular adult classes have been run there for years, and you can join them without an invitation. Children's activities are another matter; they are in After-school clubs and classes for children in Florianópolis — dance, music, languages, sports and the state art school (in Russian).

Discrepancy in sources

Is CRAI operating? Sources contradict each other, and both are recent.

CRAI (Centro de Referência de Atendimento ao Imigrante) opened on 1 February 2018 at Rua Tenente Silveira, 225, sala 1, Edifício Hércules, Centro — reception Mon–Fri 9:00–12:00 and 14:30–17:30, six specialists, capacity for thirty people per day. This is confirmed by the state government.

The discrepancy was this:

  • the UFSC services list, updated 17 Jul 2026, names CRAI as active and gives the phone (48) 3221-2621;
  • a journalistic analysis claims that the centre is closed, and that since 2019 the city has remained without a specialized governmental body for immigrant reception.

The conflict is resolved in favour of the second version, and the state itself resolved it. The institutional page of the secretariat for social assistance, titled “Recepção ao imigrante”, sends a newcomer to CRAS, CREAS and Centro Pop by municipality and does not mention CRAI at all. This is the page of the same department that opened the centre in 2018, and it does not list it.

What this means in practice. There is no specialized immigrant desk at the state level; its role is performed by the ordinary social assistance network — the same CRAS and CREAS that everyone uses. The secretariat posts address lists as separate files, and the department's general phone number is (48) 3664-0962.

Still, do not go to Tenente Silveira without calling first: the address and phone from the UFSC list live on in directories, but they have no confirmation from the state. The church and university services from the table above operate independently and do not depend on CRAI's fate.
