Brazil is an almost cashless country, but Pix is unavailable to a tourist: it requires a Brazilian bank account, and that is opened only with CPF and, as a rule, proof of address. CPF is issued to foreigners in Brazil too, but CPF by itself does not open an account. What works for a visitor: pay with a Visa or Mastercard, keep a small amount of reais in cash for minor expenses, withdraw money at Banco24Horas ATMs and always refuse conversion into your card's currency.
Currency
Brazilian real, BRL, symbol R$. Official Central Bank PTAX rate on 30 Oct 2026: dollar R$ 5.42, euro R$ 6.05. Ten days before that the rate moved within a wide corridor — dollar from R$ 5.01 to R$ 5.50 — so this is a snapshot, not an absolute: check for your travel date. A currency exchange office and a bank sell foreign currency at their own rate, worse than the official one.
Pix: why a tourist can't use it
Pix is the Central Bank of Brazil's instant payment system, free for individuals, operating 24/7. It accounts for more than half of all financial transactions in the country: it is used to pay for everything, from taxis to coconuts on the beach.
The problem is that to use Pix you need to register a key (chave) at a Brazilian financial institution, and for that you need an account in a Brazilian bank. An account, in turn, requires CPF and usually proof of address in Brazil. A tourist arriving for two weeks does not have any of this.
CPF for a non-resident
CPF is issued to foreigners — both residents and non-residents. There are two channels:
- In Brazil — free via Receita Federal online form, by e-mail or at its office; for R$ 7 — at partner points: cartório, Banco do Brasil, Caixa, Correios. A photo ID is required and, if it does not contain place of birth and parents, a birth or marriage certificate.
- Abroad — free at a Brazilian consulate by appointment via e-Consular, with form FCPF and the foreign passport.
Details, with timelines and documents, are in CPF for a foreigner — what it's for and how to get it.
A CPF alone does not get you an account or Pix. It is needed for other things — buying real estate, investments, sometimes for buying a SIM or domestic airline tickets.
If an account and Pix already exist: protections and limits
For those who already have a Brazilian account — what the Central Bank introduced by Oct 2026:
- Refund in case of fraud (MED). A claim is filed at the customer's bank, there is a dispute button in the app, it has been operational since Oct 2025. The transfer must be no older than 80 days. Since 2026 funds are tracked not only on the recipient's first account but further along the chain. MED does not cancel a transfer made by mistake in amount or key, buyer's remorse or a commercial dispute without signs of fraud, and a refund is not guaranteed: if there is no money left in the accounts, there is nothing to return.
- Unregistered phone. Since Nov 2024 Pix from a device that the client has not registered at the bank is limited to R$ 200 per transfer and R$ 1,000 per day.
- Night limit. The standard for transfers between individuals from 20:00 to 6:00 — R$ 1,000, the start of the night can be shifted to 22:00. Since 2025 the bank is obliged to set limits according to the client's risk profile, therefore the figure may differ at a specific bank.
- Recurring debits. Pix Automático debits under a single authorization: subscriptions, utility bills. Operational since 16 Jun 2025; in the authorization you can set a ceiling amount.
Third-party apps “Pix without CPF”
There are commercial services on the market promising payment via Pix QR-codes from a dollar balance without CPF and without a Brazilian account. These are not a government mechanism, but intermediaries. There is no verified data on their reliability, fees and legal status — so we cannot recommend them.
Cards
Visa and Mastercard are accepted everywhere: restaurants, shops, taxis, museums. Contactless payment is widespread. Amex is accepted noticeably less, Mir does not work at all.
Always refuse payment in your card's currency. The terminal or ATM will offer to charge in dollars or euros instead of reais — this is DCC (Dynamic Currency Conversion), its rate is deliberately worse. Always choose reais.
Cash withdrawal
ATMs with Visa/Plus and Mastercard/Cirrus logos work. Main networks: Banco24Horas, Banco do Brasil, Bradesco, Santander, Caixa.
Benchmarks as of Jul 2026 according to secondary sources:
| Parameter | Benchmark |
|---|---|
| ATM fee | R$ 12–24 per operation, plus a convenience fee around R$ 5.90 |
| Limit per operation | usually R$ 500–1,500 |
| For foreign cards | often a limit around R$ 1,000 |
| Operating hours | usually from 6:00 to 22:00 |
Your card-issuing bank's fee will be added to this. So withdraw less often and in larger amounts, not little by little.
At night ATMs in many places limit cash dispensing — this is an anti-crime measure, not a malfunction.
IOF: tax on currency operations
The Brazilian tax on foreign exchange operations IOF for a visitor using a foreign card is almost unnoticeable. Under art. 15-B of Decree 6.306/2007 as amended by Decree 12.499/2025, as of Oct 2026:
| Operation | IOF |
|---|---|
| Payment with a foreign card in Brazil | 0% |
| Transfer from abroad to a Brazilian account | 0.38% |
| Purchase of foreign cash currency in Brazil | 3.5% |
| Spending and withdrawal with a Brazilian card abroad | 3.5% |
The last two lines concern those who already have a Brazilian account and travel abroad. The 3.5% rates were introduced in 2025, Congress repealed them, and they are in force by STF decision — this is one reason why the topic should be rechecked. The issuing bank of the foreign card takes its own conversion fee, which is unrelated to IOF.
Exchanging cash
- Exchange at casas de câmbio — specialized exchange offices. They are in airports, shopping centers, tourist areas.
- The airport rate is worse than in the city. At the airport, exchange only what you need to get into town.
- Compare city rates via the aggregator melhorcambio.com.
- It is better to bring dollars or euros: reais outside South America are exchanged at a poor rate.
- Banks also exchange currency, but usually slower and not always more favorable than exchange offices.
Cash vs card: where to use which
| Situation | What to pay with |
|---|---|
| Restaurants, shops, supermarkets | card |
| Taxis and ride-hailing apps | card in the app |
| Beach vendors, coconuts, caipirinhas | cash or Pix — card is often not accepted |
| Street food, markets | cash |
| Small towns and the interior | cash required |
| Tips | cash |
A reasonable cash reserve is small. Carrying large sums in Brazil is not advisable for safety reasons, see Safety in Brazil — statistics, scam schemes, rules of conduct (in Russian).
